If the problem > persists, ask on the dump mailing list. After poking at this machine for some time, I realized there was something more fundamentally wrong. lilo (!) would not complete. Many processes were hung. I applied the M$ solution and rebooted it -- the hard way, as "shutdown" wouldn't complete either. Once the machine came back up, everything started working fine (I did patch dump to dump-0.4b24), including amanda. Lesson: don't assume it's amanda's problem or fault until you make sure the rest of the machine is behaving properly. Bernhard, thank you very much for your input. I appreciate your responses.
