Greetings,

I've successfully got Amanda 2.4.2p2 up and running backing up Linux and
IRIX clients and everything seems to work fine save a few systems. I
get this in my amreport output for several disks:

tintin /export/tintin/cvanderk lev 0 FAILED [/bin/gtar returned 2]

/-- tintin /export/tintin/cvanderk lev 0 FAILED [/bin/gtar returned
2]
sendbackup: start [tintin:/export/tintin/cvanderk level 0]
sendbackup: info BACKUP=/bin/gtar
sendbackup: info RECOVER_CMD=/bin/gzip -dc |/bin/gtar -f... -
sendbackup: info COMPRESS_SUFFIX=.gz
sendbackup: info end
? gtar:
/sb/admin/apps/Linux/var/amanda/gnutar-lists/tintin_export_tintin_cvanderk_0.new:
Cannot open: Permission denied
| Total bytes written: 11685662720 (11GB, 2.4MB/s)
? gtar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
sendbackup: error [/bin/gtar returned 2]
\--------

This is frustrating as the directory /sb/admin/apps/Linux/var/amanda is
owned by user amanda and group backup and there should be no permissions
issue. Here's a trimmed directory listing of
/sb/admin/apps/Linux/var/amanda/gnutar-lists:

---
total 1937
drwxr-xr-x 2 amanda backup 4096 Oct 9 00:30 ./
drwxr-xr-x 3 amanda backup 25 Jul 9 13:43 ../
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 2281 Oct 2 00:34 moby_etc_0
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 2281 Oct 8 22:48 moby_etc_1
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 150246 Oct 3 02:16
moby_export_moby_apps_0
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 152897 Oct 4 22:53
moby_export_moby_apps_1
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 152960 Oct 8 22:48
moby_export_moby_apps_2
-rw------- 1 amanda backup 0 Oct 9 00:01
tintin_export_tintin_cvanderk_0.new

There are obviously many more files in that directory than what I've
listed, but I've left enough to show that the vast majority of clients
have had no trouble writing to that directory. It just seems to be a
select few. Furthermore I don't see why an ability to write to this
directory causes tar to return an error code of 2 yet it still runs
through a full backup before exiting and failing to complete sendbackup.
