I don't know that amanda actually uses anything other than the length 
parameter at this point.

Yes!  You *never* want both hardware and software compression enabled.  
Telling the hardware to compress already compressed data will actually 
make the data bigger on tape.  You may have hit EOT, thus the I/O error.
