Nifty.  I *do* recall something about people having issues with very large 
disklists, and I believe it was in the estimates stage.  Search the 
archives for the thread.

Well, that message is coming from server-src/driver.c, where it's reading 
the schedule in a pipe from planner.  I'd take another hard look at 
amdump.1 as well as sendsize*debug on the samba server(s).

Speaking of which, how many samba hosts do you have for all those laptops?  
Perhaps you're overloading smbclient with so many requests?

That last one is definitely a WAG.  ;)
