at last, the block size fixed the backups, using 4096 was the answer. the reason why it still looked like it had failed was because the second tape had stuff on it from a previous attempt that failed. so amverify was checking all tapes even though I'd only used the first one. once I relabeled the tape and rerun amverify everything was sweet.
