Hello all,

I have recently set up an AMANDA server on a SUN Ultra5 (solaris8) and have
been using SAMBA to backup
Windows clients. In order to assure myself that I am, in fact, getting real
data on tape, I am trying to restore
a partition. I found that I can use amrecover to pull down the latest level
0 backup from tape. However, when
I attemp to get the latest level 1 backup, it first asks for the tape
containing the latest level 0 and tries to restore this backup ( I believe
this is correct...) and then asks for the tape containing the latest level 1
backup. From here, it seems to extract the level 1 backup. Am I doing
something wrong? Do I need to restore the level 1 to a different directory
than the level 0 and manually replace the updated files? That would seem to
be somewhat impractical...

Here's a little info on what I am doing... I am completely new at this, and
haven't even figured out how to restore
the files straight back to their original machines yet, so I've been
restoring them to spare space on the backup
server and using ws-ftp to retrieve them back to the Windows clients.
Neither are my dump statistics as
impressive as I would like. At this point, my first concern is to ensure
the validity of the backups. I can work
out the rest later.

amrecover>extract

Extracting files using tape drive /dev/rmt/0cbn on host amada-server.
The following tapes are needed: Daily011

At this point, it begins to extract the files requested (level 1 ONLY). The
thing that gets me is that I can successfully retrieve the level 0 by
itself. I only get this error when I try to pull down the level 1 and it
calls for the level 0 first. I have tried to examine this file
(amidxtaped.debug) but I cannot find it on the amanda-server! As you will
recall from above when I start the amrecover utility, I get this error:

501 No index records for host: amanda-server. Invalid?

Does this error and the fact that I seem to have no amidxtaped.debug file
mean that I do not have the indexing set up properly (at all ?!?)? Any
ideas on how I can fix this?

I'd appreciate any help or advice I that comes my way. Thanks,

B
