Hi all,

I Admin several LANs and I use Amanda to do the server backups on
each. I've been running Amanda for over a year, relatively problem free.

Lately I've been tasked with restoring some files from my backup
archives, and so far, I've been unable to.

Here's the procedure I use:

Find the tape, then run amrestore /dev/nst0 hosta /usr/local/share

which results in the dump file for that volume being copied to the
current working directory (this part works fine).

But, when I try to restore individual files from that dump archive, I
can't. I use an interactive restore to mark the files I want for
extraction. Then I run extract command, and it gives me this error:

Tape error while skipping over inode (whatever inode number)
Do you wish to continue [y, n]?

If you select yes it gives you the same error about 10 times and then it

switches to this error:

Error re-syncing to tape.
Do you wish to continue [y, n]

I don't understand why this is happening. If I run an fsck on the volume

that was dumped to file, I get no errors. Yet all my backups seem to be
useless. Can anyone suggest what might be causing the problem? Here's my

system config

System 1:

Dual P3-500, 1 GB RAM, Gigabit NIC
OS: Linux-2.2.18, Amanda 2.4.1p1
Tape Device: Quantum DLT-7000
Tape type: Sony DLT-IV tape

If there's any more info I should post, tell me.

Thanks,

Stephen
