That's normal when starting amandad by hand.  It listens for packets for 
30 seconds, then gives up.  The real question is: does an amandad*debug 
get created when you run amcheck?  If so, what are its contents?  If not, 
did you restart inetd after changing the config file?  Is TCP wrappers 
getting in the way?
