Greetings,

I've just started using Amanda, and so far it looks good, but I
do have a few questions regarding how to best set things up.

I started out with this setup: (We have a single tape drive, changing
tapes every weekday)

dumpcycle 1 weeks
runspercycle 5
tapecycle 6 tapes

My initial thought was to bring a set of tapes for one
week offsite (using no-reuse or something), but on
second thought it is probably better to increase thetapecycle
and take half the set offsite. Is that a normal strategy for
Amanda use?

As an experiment, at the end of the first dumpcycle, I decided
to let Amanda do its thing with this set of tapes, and see what
happened.

Of course, Amanda started out with level 0 backups, but when
starting a new dumpcycle, this level 0 was overwritten by the
incremental. So my amoverview for this partition looks like
this:

host /partition 1 1 1 2 3

This means that (if I had no other backup) I would be without
a lot of older files for this partition.

Is this expected behaviour, or maybe a result of too low number
of tapes? Should we start with a full archival dump of all
file systems?

If I increased the number of tapes to e.g. 18 (three weeks plus
extras), would that be a more sensible setup?

Best,
Reidar
