Some thoughts:

  What is inparallel set to?  That controls how many dumper processes
  are started.  You might shrink it down a bit.

  Can you do a "ps -lp <pid>" on each of the Amanda processes as it is
  running?  In particular, it will be interesting to see the process size.

  You might try recompiling Amanda with a smaller MAX_TAPE_BLOCK_KB.
  It defaults to 4 MBytes.

Add more memory?  :-)

Or, more seriously, add more swap space.
