> black ad0s1f lev 0 FAILED [mesg read: Connection reset by peer]

This message comes from dumper (on the server side) and basically says
(one of) the connection(s) to the client vanished.

Here are some things I would check:

  * Is there a firewall or that type of thing between the server and
"black"? Any chance it has an idle connection timeout "feature"?
Some of the connections Amanda makes to the client are idle for
long periods of time (while the data stream is cranking along).

  * Look at the corresponding /tmp/amanda/sendbackup*debug file on
"black". See if anything looks odd. Look at the start and stop
times and see if they are on some even boundary (also implying a
    timeout someplace)

  * Ditto in amdump.NN on the server. Look for the "FILE-DUMP" or
"PORT-DUMP" message (probably the latter) that started the backup
and compare the two time deltas. Or get:

      ftp://gandalf.cc.purdue.edu/pub/amanda/amdumpts

which will convert the file to wallclock.
