Per you later email, I looked at man amreport. I have run that command
as user amanda:

{datadev:amanda}$ amreport Daily -l log.20020206.0       
amreport: no printer command defined

I don't have a printer defined in amanda.conf since I don't plan to
print labels.  There is also no default printer defined.  This command,
after complaing about the printer, does send another blank email.

Any ideas?

OK, thanks.  I installed gnu tar 1.13.25 and now i can do an amrecover
just fine.
