You just need to make sure that you're using a known good version of tar, 
and it has to be GNUtar.  If you don't have it, go to alpha.gnu.org and 
install GNUtar 1.13.19.

Backing up and restoring using tar is almost identical to using dump.  
Just specify 'program "GNUTAR"' in the appropriate dumptype and use 
amrecover (or amrestore) as before.
