Amanda does not use .rhosts (or /etc/hosts.equiv) unless you explicitly ask it to when you build it. It uses a file that is formatted exactly like .rhosts but named .amandahosts (in fact, I hard link the two together). Make sure the .amandahosts file is in the home directory of your Amanda user, is owned by the Amanda user, that all the directories down to that file are searchable by the Amanda user and that the file is mode 0600 or 0400.
