There's two ways to use a hard disk as your backup medium.  The first way 
is to define your tapedevice as a non-existent tape drive, and amanda will 
go into "degraded" mode and backup to disk.  This appears to be what you 
were doing (on purpose or not).  2.4.2p2 "supports" this.

The other way is to use the file: driver as your tapedevice.  The details 
are in the amanda(8) man page shipped with 2.4.3bN.  Only 2.4.3bN supports 
this.
