It depends on what you change in the dumptype.

That kind of change will not matter.  Amanda writes information in the
tape header that tell it everything it needs to know about compression.

This would have to be done at a full dump boundary since if you have a
full dump of a file system in dump format, incrementals in tar format
are useless.

So make your dumptype change, then use "amadmin <config> force ...".
