You can try tripwire or mtree.  Mtree comes with OpenBSD (and was part 
of the BSD 4.3 distribution) and tripwire is available at 
www.tripwire.org.  Both take some work to configure, but they will 
periodically scan your host and report any anomalies: new files, changed 
file protections, deleted files, etc.  They also can encrypt their 
snapshots so that a rogue user can't eacily fool them.
