Note: disable hardware compression when running this program.

It might be tape marks on your drive are handled "internally" and don't
take up any actual space.

That depends on all sorts of other things.  Controller.  Cables.  SCSI
termination.  Media.  CPU.  ...

Are you sure /dev/tape had hardware compression turned off?
