If you rerun amcheck again without touching anything and it is happy, I suspect that the changer script needs to wait longer after the tape change before trying to read the label to give the changer time to insert the next tape and for the drive to rewind. Otherwise try watching the library while you run amcheck and see what it is trying to do, and how far along it gets before it returns the error.
