Just realised I've left out the most important part: the tape is a 1GB dat (verified by tapetype), or about 2GB with hardware compression.
The point is, unless I specify software compression, it won't do c1t1d0s0 at all. And it always tries to stick on the end of the first tape, presumably because no end marker is encountered yet. Chuck
