Not stating the obvious I hope, but this should not be:

        jon: telnet localhost amandaidx
        Trying 127.0.0.1...
        Connected to localhost.
        Escape character is '^]'.
        220 butch AMANDA index server (2.4.2) ready.

This is the starting dialog I get.

At least you can now focus on amandaidx.
