The commands are detailed in docs/RESTORE (which goes through the various "levels" of restoring -- from amrecover down to mt/dd/tar). Note that I have no idea how well tar will do restoring / on Solaris, i.e. I don't know that you'll get a functional OS. You may want to use ufsdump -- the dump horror stories to which you refer mainly deal with Linux.
