I had the same problem that you are having,
I forgot one line in amanda.conf, session dumptype
I always do full backups, so my dumptype is like this
define dumptype always full {
global
program "GNUTAR"
comment "full dump of this file system always"
compress none
priority high
dumpcicle 0
index yes
}
don�t forget to put index yes on your dumptype :-)
