Try using ps -ef | grep amanda or ps -ef | grep rmt to
see if anything is using your tape drive. ps -ef |
grep amdump ,etc. etc.

I ran into this by accident when I was running amdump
in another screen and it got hosed due to a bad tape
and I tried to control-c it, and make a big mess.

Also, us mt or mtx to issue a status command and make
sure the tape drive is there. Try run amstatus to see
if anything is currently attempting to dump.
