Ouch!, that says a lot, particularly if the previous admin was using whatever M$ based utility that possibly came with the drive to try it out. Reading between the lines a bit here, I think the first thing I'd do is get an RMA from Exabyte and let them take a look at the drive, making sure you have a good drive in the first place.
