With the many difficulties you have had with amanda and its design,
I wonder if there might not be some other backup software that
would better meet your particular requirements.
I've hardly had any difficulties at all. My configuration works rather well, and setting it up wasn't that much trouble, either. Even the alias-based entries described here work in a sense, especially when you're not concerned about incrementals, since Amanda will retry next day when an entry fails, and the conditions are different then, so the same timeout isn't likely to occur again. (There's no guarantee against it, of course, but I'm quite sure that an entry has never failed to get backed up some time during a dumpcycle due to this problem.)

I'm sometimes starting to wonder if I'm imaging it all, and that something is horribly wrong with my backups, when I see some of the response on this list, but I'm more inclined to think that Amanda has a better and more flexible design that some people here think.

Having said that, I have come across *some* weak spots, and also thougt about various possible improvements, and I think it's right to give some feedback in those cases.
