HP-1537A?  I think that is the same changer I have.

It has 2 DIP switches that control two things:

 - what state compression begins in when power is first applied
 - whether this state is changeable by software control

IIRC, those particular switches are internal (requiring case
removal).  hp.doc, support, doc/manuals is a good site for
online documentation.
