Your guess was quite good, I really had it exported with no_root_squash.
I just tried what's happening when I remove this option, re-export the
filesystem, do the mount on the new client again and run another check.
Unfortunately it doesn't really change the behaviour, amcheck still says
WARNING: xxx: selfcheck request timed out. Host down?
And in the logfile of the new client again:
Nov 19 14:24:31 xxx xinetd[18451]: Deactivating service amanda due to excessive
incoming connections. Restarting in 30
seconds.
Nov 19 14:25:01 xxx xinetd[18451]: Activating service amanda
Not a bad idea after all, I also thought this might be the key when reading
your email.
