Can you post your amanda.conf?  Also, the amdump.N file associate with 
this backup would be useful.

*snip*  Eww.  Try this for a columnspec -- I use it with an AIT3 drive and 
similarly large filesystems:

columnspec "HostName=0:8,Disk=1:13,OrigKB=1:9,OutKB=1:8,DumpRate=1:7,TapeRate=1:7"
