I tested and these is the answer:

bash-2.05# ./gethostbyaddr 10.32.3.19
addr 10.32.3.19 -> gr
                   gr.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk (alias)
                   10.32.3.19 (addr)
bash-2.05# ./gethostbyaddr 10.32.1.1
addr 10.32.1.1 -> zeusv480
                  loghost (alias)
                  zeusv480.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk (alias)
                  10.32.1.1 (addr)
bash-2.05# ./gethostbyname gr.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk
name gr.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk -> gr
                              gr.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk (alias)
                              10.32.3.19 (addr)
bash-2.05# ./gethostbyname zeusv480.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk
name zeusv480.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk -> zeusv480
                                    loghost (alias)
                                    zeusv480.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk (alias)
                                    10.32.1.1 (addr)
bash-2.05# ./gethostbyname zeusv480
name zeusv480 -> zeusv480
                 loghost (alias)
                 zeusv480.smartweb.rgu.ac.uk (alias)
                 10.32.1.1 (addr)

So, everything is working fine.

In the client I have the same answers.-

Any other thoughts? Sorry but I'm completely thoughtless.-

Kind Regards.

Confirm that with the attached two programs. Do it from both the server and
the client. Amanda may use different mechanisms than you are testing with
and these programs use the same ones used by amanda.
