You can schedule amcheck with cron for any config at any time.

By checking the man page for amcheck I also note these options:

  -M ...        Mail report recipient is ...
  -m            Only send mail on errors
  -t            only do tape tests

Isn't this what you are seeking?

Have you looked at chg-manual?
I haven't in a long time but ISTR it having such a feature.
