Here it is my settings in my conf file :
ctimeout 10 # number of seconds to check each servers. dtimeout 7200 etimeout 600 # number of seconds per filesystem for estimates.
Size of my entry /home/ftp/unix_accounts is more than 5GB. I tested in taking subdirectories of this directory less than 300 MB. It runs correctly.

The default timeout for data is 1800 seconds, so I suspect increasing dtimeout in your amanda.conf would fix this :-)
