You seem to be running out of space on a 20GB tape after 18GB have been written. That sounds a little bit like you are using hardware compression (that actually expands your pre-compressed data when writing to tape). This issue has been discussed several times already on the list.

Apart from that, the second error message reads `Input/output error'
rather than `No space left', so it might be you ran into a bad tape.

I disabled the hardware compression with:
mt -f /dev/nst0 compression off
