Oops, followup to my own posting, sigh.  Above is true but irrelevant.

The mtx called from chg-zd-mtx is hardwired at configure time:

% egrep '^MTX' /usr/local/libexec/chg-zd-mtx
MTX=/usr/local/bin/mtx

Edit the definition, or re-configure and rebuild.
