Is it possible to run the amandad daemon as a standalone process and not from inetd or xinetd?

No, but if you want to avoid (x)inetd (why?) then, if you have nc (netcat) installed, this could work:

as user amanda, run (maybe with "nohup ... &"):

        while :
        do nc -l -u -p 10080 -e /.../amandad
        done

(never tested, no promises, no garantees, no warranty, YAYOR.)

Why would like to avoid (x)inetd? Just curious.
