Install not clear

Dear All
I downloaded amanda-2.4.4.tar[1].gz
1- [EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# tar  zxvf /mnt/cdrom/amanda-2.4.4.tar[1].gz
2- ok
3- I read yours:
    1.2. BUILDING AND INSTALLING THE BINARIES
   A.  Back at the top-level source directory (which is?)            
     
, build the sources:
       1. make (don't exist)

       2. su root (there isn't amnda 2.4.4) ; make install.....

I'm not clever but it doesn't seem very clear

BEFORE OF THIS EXPERIENCE

4- I have redhat9a - I tried to install amanda from install applications
   the system asks me CD2 and stop
   I type whereis amanda and the system shows me
amanda: /etc/amanda /usr/lib/amanda
ok
[EMAIL PROTECTED] tape-src]# cd /etc/amanda
[EMAIL PROTECTED] amanda]# amanda
bash: amanda: command not found
.......
Could you help me please
