Symptom of tar version 1.13. Bad, very bad. You need tar.1.13.19 at least, or better yet 1.13.25. Get it from:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.13.25.tar.gz
You can fix your indexes by stripping off the leading digits, up to the first dot:
(untested, use at your own risk)
gunzip *.gz perl -i.bak -e 's!^\d+/\.!!' * gzip * rm *.bak.gz # after verification of the results :-)
