Greetings. I'm still smarting from a large bullet wound in my foot, and I
thought it might have some bearing on the problem with amcheck.
I installed Amanda by compiling from source on a linux box. I hadn't done
this in a while, and I absent-mindedly made a directory:
/tmp/amanda
on this system, copied the tar ball into it, unpacked, did the configure,
make, make install, etc., all without any obvious problem.
But then I also observed the persistent symptom that amcheck of that system
always failed. [...much pointless thrashing omitted...] It finally dawned
on me that the directory that I had created, /tmp/amanda, belonged to root
and could not be written by the amanda user. I simply renamed the
directory, and all was fine after that.
