just gettign amanda going on a new install and from what i can tell, the dang thing is ALWAYS running compression server side, and in --best mode DESPITE the dumptypes defining compression to be done on the clients, and in --fast!

The tape host really does not have the CPU to do this....

i'll include relevant amanda.conf snippets if wanted.
