Can't provide a checklist but maybe you should look through the log- and debug-files. Usually they go to /tmp/amanda and something like /usr/adm/amanda/<conf> (at least on this box here). Check amanda.conf for the value of "logdir", the debugdir is set at configure-time by the option "--with-debugging=/tmp/amanda". You should see what's happening and failing from the debugfiles then.
