I haven't had yet the time to download and install 2.4.5. Maybe [patch to fallback to "SMALLEST" if nothing fits] is already included in there.

Just downloaded, examined, installed and tested 2.4.5. And the patch is already there. Even a better, clearer implementation (as usual from Jean-Louis). From the ChangeLog:
