Chuck,
You need both client and server machines listed in the .amandahosts file on the server. Currently you've only got the one server listed there.....

You need the line:
server.domain.co.uk root
in ~amanda/.amandahosts.
I know it's had to believe but I do have that in my ~amanda /.amandahosts file
