Would the header message have been any clearer if it said

   dd if=<tape> bs=32k skip=1 | /bin/gzip -dc | bin/tar -...f -

or maybe

   dd if=<tape> bs=32k skip=1 | /bin/gzip -dc | bin/tar -<tar_options> -f -
