For Exchange you can use exmerge to dump all mailboxes to pst and then back that up. Also, you can use the microsoft backup to backup Exchange as a database (to a file). Run that backup before amanda and then backup that file. SQL can also backup to files which can then be backed up. Active Directory can be handled like Exchange I would think. Use MS backup and then backup that file.

Not the most elegant solution, but it will work.

Subject: Microsoft & Oracle backups

Hi folks,

I’m looking for a way to back up several different Microsoft applications (Exchange 2003, SQL Server, Active Directory) as well as interfacing Amanda with Oracle RMAN. File level backups via Samba won’t quite cut it; file locking issues, etc. I thought I read somewhere (SysAdmin magazine) that there is a windows agent but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Is there a good reference for how these special cases can be handled?

Thanks,

Brett
