Actually you should have fixed sendmail instead of unfixing /etc/hosts :-)

/etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 saturn.example.com saturn localhost.localdomain localhost

Next what is the output of "hostname"?
That should be the fqdn.
You may set the hostname if needed (and then find out how your
startup script configure that hostname and change that source of all evil. (RH stores it in /etc/sysconfig/network).
