gentoo doesn't encourage to do that, it only provides the choice to do so. If you look at the gentoo-amanda-ebuild you will notice that it isn't on the edge at all, rather pretty conservative. The stable release there is still at 2.4.5 ... although the unstable latest ebuild runs fine and stable already. Although app-arch/tar is a different thing maybe. In general gentoo perfectly lets you choose particular releases of packages and stay with them, which is a choice I like to have very much. Stefan
