Hi all,
I'm having trouble trying to use a HP Ultrium 448 SCSI tape drive.
This is a replacement for a slightly smaller drive that finally
failed.
I was able to find a tapetype listed, and am able to label tapes
and apparently do backups (no errors, email is sent claiming to
have backed up all 100+ Gigs).
However, when I try to restore, I can only restore files from the
front 1/3 (or so) of the tape. If I try to restore files from
farther into the tape, the "add" command appears to work, but the
restore fails. The attempted restore looks like this:
restore > extract
Extract requested files
extract file ./cube3/etc/fstab
End-of-tape encountered
./ssl3/etc/crontab: not found on tape
./cp0/etc/services: not found on tape
./ad-nr02/etc/fstab: not found on tape
Add links
Set directory mode, owner, and times.
set owner/mode for '.'? [yn] n
restore > quit
The cube3 file is within the first 25% of the tape, the failed
files are from later in the tape.
So, obviously the question is WTF? I admit to using a rather old
version of Amanda, but it has worked flawlessly for several years
on exactly this box (but with the old 160/320 drive). Why is that
"End-of-tape" apparently showing up before it should?
Drive: HP Ultrium 448 SCSI
OS: FreeBSD 4.11
Amanda: Version 2.3.0
One more thing, I spoke to HP Tape techs and all they could tell me
was that "the amanda software, and unix systems in general, are not
supported", but I'm pretty sure that's not true because there are
several examples of tapetype for it, and people appear to be using
it with amanda. HP techs are pretty much useless RE unix. [sigh]
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
