Hello all. I have been off of the list for a while and recently rejoined. I
have had some strange behavior lately with some tapes. Amanda has been using
2 tapes when the backup could have easily fit on one tape.

Here is the message in the mail report:
taper: tape TAPE07 kb 4651360 fm 6 writing file: Input/output error
taper: retrying trc-router.trc.crownmx.com://trc-ex2/d$.1 on new tape due
to: [writing file: Input/output error]
taper: tape TAPE08 kb 7318816 fm 6 [OK]

Does this mean my tapes are going bad and I need new tapes or what?

What kind of tapes/drive?

Sounds somewhat old given that you're only putting less than 8G on the tape (maybe dds/2 or 3)?

It could be that you need to use a cleaning tape. It could also be the tapes. Try a cleaning tape and see if things improve. If not, try new tapes. If still not, and the drive is quite old, it could be the drive itself needs replacing. Before I got my new AIT5 tape library, I had over a half dozen servers each with their own dds/3 drive. They were relatively old, and I had to replace a couple of them over the years.
