Jeremy, Be careful with the 'JLM' abbreviation, or you'll get confused with Jean-Louis Martineau. ;-)
The server logs you've provided say that the Amanda server is in communication with the client, but that for some reason the client could not perform estimates. There should be a logfile on the client that specifies what the problem is. Can you check in /tmp/amanda? If it's not there, you'll can look at the contents of the libamanda.so shared library using the strings command. That file will name a directory called AMANDA_TMPDIR; the client should create a subdirectory 'amanda' of that. That is, if libamanda.so contains the string 'AMANDA_TMPDIR="/foo/bar"', then the Amanda client will create debugging logs in /foo/bar/amanda. Hope that helps.
