I think software raid is more fault prone. Also a extra controller doesn't affect your CPU load, because everything is handled by the controller itself.
My experiences with 3ware SATA controllers are best until now. I have them meanwhile here in about 20 servers. Most problems I had with Adaptec SCSI raid controllers until now. 3ware drivers are allready included in the kernel. The monitoring software is running stable and can be accessed by browser. Removing/Adding disks at runtime was never a problem.
